Dell Introducing GPS and Wi-Fi Positioning Option for Netbooks, Notebooks

Dell is introducing GPS combined with Wi-Fi positioning as an option for its notebook and netbook computers. Rather than simply adding a GPS chip, Dell is rolling out a strategy that is built around location-based services. For example, it has created a partnership with Web site Loki to enhance local search, store and product finders, and location-aware social media.

Dell is calling this package the "Dell Wireless 700 Location Solution," and it will be offered with the Dell Mini 10 first. The Mini 10 is a very compact (10-inch diagonal screen) computer that fits easily into a briefcase or large purse and is convenient for commuters and those who need a small form factor. Prices for minis are small, also, with Mini 10 versions selling for $299 $449.

In addition to a Broadcom A-GPS chip, the Dell Wireless 700 Location Solution will integrate Wi-Fi positioning from Skyhook Wireless. Skyhook uses its database of Wi-Fi locations to help locate a device when it's out of reach of GPS satellite signals. This will enhance position accuracy indoors.
